Crank Position SensorThe purpose of the crank position sensor is to monitor how fast the crankshaft is rotating. The crankshaft is connected to the pistons in the engine, and it translates the linear up-and-down movement of the engine into a rotational movement which then turns the wheels. The crank position sensor is sometimes mounted on the end of the crankshaft, although in many car models, it is connected to the crankshaft by a belt or chain. The information obtained from the crank position sensor is used by the electronic engine control unit (ECU) to control various engine parameters. For example, the ECU adjusts the engine's ignition system timing and valve timing based on information from the crank position sensor. The sensor is also used to determine engine speed in terms of revolutions per minute (RPMs). The crank position sensor is only used in modern, electronically-adjusted engines. On older engines, the ignition distributor is manually adjusted using a timing mark on the engine. Failure of the crank position sensor may manifest itself in several ways. It can worsen the idling of the engine, the firing of the piston or the acceleration of the vehicle. It can also lead to backfiring or motor vibration. In some cases, a failed crank position sensor can cause the engine to stall while the vehicle is being driven, or else prevent the engine from starting at all. The failure can be caused by simple wear and tear. Such failures are usually found on older engines. Failure can also be caused by engine fluids or water that has leaked into the sensor. Extreme heat in the engine (as a result of the failure of other parts such as a gasket) can damage the sensitive electronic parts in the sensor and cause it to fail. Problems with the crankshaft itself can also lead to failure of the sensor; a worn thrust bearing can cause the crankshaft to slide around to the wrong part of the engine and rub against the sensor.

Whether you want your engine to purr like a kitten or roar like a lion, you need a working crank position sensor to achieve your goals. Worn or damaged engine CPS modules cause problems that make your engine stutter and stall. Get a handle on your engine timing and injection settings by installing a replacement sensor as soon as you confirm yours has a problem.

This sensor relays information about the crankshaft to your ECU. The numbers it reports allow the computer to determine the engine speed, making for smooth and efficient operation. Look for your sensor at the end of your crankshaft. If you don't see it there, it might be attached to the shaft with a belt or chain.

We're proud to carry great sensor manufacturers at PartsGeek.com, including Bosch, Spectra Premium, Mopar, Motorcraft, Standard Motor Products, Delphi, Genuine, Vemo and Beru. We have millions of parts and accessories for you to choose from at discount prices. We also ship almost everything in less than two days and have a great 30-day return policy.

Your crankshaft is powered by your engine's pistons. When combustion forces the pistons to move, that up-and-down motion causes the crankshaft to rotate. The crank position sensor measures the movement of the crankshaft in terms of:

  • Speed
  • Position
  • Rotational direction

Crank speed data is used by your engine's computer to determine:

  • Engine timing
  • Valve timing
  • Injection control

If the engine CPS reports this information accurately, your ECU is able to make sure you have a smooth ride and complete control over your emissions.

The crank position sensor itself comes in many different designs, so make sure you get the one that's compatible with your engine control unit. Look for your sensor where it's directly mounted to the crankshaft or connected to it by a belt or a chain.

Replacement crank position sensors cost between $15-200, on average. If you don't want to keep installing new sensors, check to see if you have any leaky parts or broken gaskets that are causing your electrical components to fail. Another good practice is to make sure all your electrical connections are in good condition and replace any faulty wires.

欧洲杯直播平台

Your first sign of a failing engine CPS is usually starting problems. If the engine has to be cool for you to boot up, check out the crank position sensor and replace it if necessary. There are other signs of a more advanced failure:

  • Rough idling
  • Stalls during driving
  • Trouble starting
  • Backfires during high revs
  • Engine vibrations or shuddering

Run diagnostics and do a visual check of the sensor to confirm any suspicions you have. Be on the lookout for frayed wires or loose connections, as these issues can cause the same problems as a broken sensor.
